After India’s independence, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru became the first Prime Minister of India, who served the country from 15 August 1947 to 27 May 1964 (16 years 286 days). Jawahar ji won the election of Prime Minister of India four times.
Jawaharlal Nehru ji has also worked for the country as the Defense Minister (31 October 1962 to 14 November 1962, 30 January 1957 to 17 April 1957 and 10 February 1953 to 10 January 1955), Ministry of External Affairs (15 August 1947 to 27 May 1964) and Ministry of Finance (13 February 1958 to 13 March 1958 and 24 July 1956 to 30 August 1956).
He was a prominent leader of the Indian Independence Movement, who served India from 1947 until his death. He was popularly known as Pandit Nehru (Adhyat Nehru or Panditji) while children used to call him Chacha Nehru.
Role in Indian Independence Movement —
Nehru’s political career began in the 1920s, when he became active in the Indian National Congress, a political party that was at the forefront of the Indian Independence Movement. He rapidly rose through the ranks of the party and became one of its most prominent leaders. He was a strong supporter of non-violent resistance and civil disobedience, and was arrested several times by the British government for his activism.
He played a leading role in the Non-Cooperation Movement of 1920-22 and the Salt Satyagraha of 1930. He was arrested several times for his political activities during the 1930s and spent almost a decade in British prisons. Nehru was twice elected President of the Indian National Congress.
Birth and Death of Jawaharlal Nehru —
He was born on 14 November 1889 in Allahabad, North-West Province of British India (present-day Uttar Pradesh). Jawaharlal was a lawyer, writer and politician by profession. He completed his honours degree from Trinity College, Cambridge in 1910 and his law degree from the Inns of Court School of Law, London. He died of a heart attack in New Delhi on 27 May 1964 at the age of 74.
He had been suffering from ill health for some time, and the cause of his death was reported to be a heart attack. His death was met with widespread grief and tributes from the Indian public and leaders around the world. His funeral was attended by a large crowd, including many prominent politicians and leaders as well as members of the public who had been influenced by his life and legacy.
After his death, India observed a period of national mourning and his funeral was attended by leaders from around the world.
