In the story of Madhusravani, we find the description of the five daughters of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. In Shivpuran too, there is a mention of a daughter, who is Manasa, the goddess of snakes.

According to the story, once Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati were playing water sports in the lake. At that time, by chance, Lord Shiva ejaculated. At the same time, Lord Shiva put his semen on a leaf. Five girls were born from that semen. But these girls were not in human form but in snake form.

Mata Parvati had no idea that five snake girls were born from Shiv Leela. But Lord Shiva knew everything and he also loved them like Ganesh and Kartikeya. That is why every morning he used to go and meet the five snake girls near the lake and play with them. This continued for many days.

Mata Parvati got suspicious that where does Mahadev go so early in the morning. Therefore, she decided that she will know this secret. One day when Lord Shiva left for the lake in the morning, Mother Parvati also followed him to the lake. Mother Parvati saw that Mahadev was playing with those five Naag Kanyas like a father.

Mother Parvati got angry seeing this and, overcome by anger, she wanted to kill the five Naag Kanyas. As soon as she raised her foot to kill them, Bholenath stopped her and told her that these five Naag Kanyas are your daughters. Mother Parvati was surprised by this statement of Mahadev and started looking at them. Then the Naag Kanyas told Goddess Parvati the story of the birth of the girls. Mother Parvati started laughing loudly after listening to the story of Lord Shiva.

The names of these Naag Kanyas of Lord Shiva are Jaya, Vishhar, Shamilbari, Dev and Dotali. While telling about his daughters, Lord Shiva said that whoever worships these Naag Kanyas on the fifth day of Shukla Paksha of Sawan month, their family will not be afraid of snakebite. Also, with the blessings of these goddesses, there is never a shortage of wealth and grains in the house. This is the reason why these five Naag Kanyas are worshipped on the day of Sawan Krishna Panchami and Sawan Shukla Panchami.

Jyoti

Another daughter of Shiva is named Jyoti and two stories are told about her birth. According to the first, Jyoti was born from the radiance of Shiva and she is the form of his halo. According to the second belief, Jyoti was born from the radiance that came out of Parvati’s forehead. Another name of Goddess Jyoti is Jwalamukhi and she is worshipped in many temples in Tamil Nadu.

Mansa

According to the folklore of Bengal, Mansa Devi is the one who cures snakebite. She was born when Shiva’s semen touched the statue of Kadru, who is called the mother of snakes. That is why she is called the daughter of Shiva but not Parvati. That is, Manasa was also not born from the womb of Parvati like Kartikeya.

It is said that Manasa’s other name is Vasuki and due to being neglected by her father, step mother and husband, she is considered to be of very angry nature. Usually, she is worshipped without any idol or picture. Instead, a branch of a tree, a clay pot or a clay snake is made and worshipped. She is worshipped to protect from chicken pox or snake bite. She is duly worshipped in many temples of Bengal.
